Mildred Hunt Whitley, 86, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 19, 2012. She was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church and also taught Sunday School there for over 40 years. Professionally, she was employed at the VA as a clerk in the commissary gift shop. Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph Cleveland and Dollie Hill Hunt; brothers, Landon Hunt (Addie), Doc Hunt (Helen), Frank Hunt, and Phillip Hunt; and sisters, Beulah Newman Maughan (Jim), Mary Trevillian (Harry), and Emma Mae Cassell Merchut (Jim). Her surviving family includes her sons, Marvin Whitley (Mary) and Gary Whitley (Bonnie); brother, Mark Hunt (Iris); sister, Colena Richardson (Lonnie); sisters-in-law, Evelyn Hunt and Irene Hunt; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A period of visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the funeral homes chapel. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Roanoke. The Rev. Ivey Adams will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mildreds name may be made to Bethel Baptist Church at 1601 South Colorado Street in Salem, Virginia 24153.
