Mildred Hunt Whitley

Mildred Hunt Whitley, 86, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 19, 2012. She was a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church and also taught Sunday School there for over 40 years. Professionally, she was employed at the VA as a clerk in the commissary gift shop. Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph Cleveland and Dollie Hill Hunt; brothers, Landon Hunt (Addie), Doc Hunt (Helen), Frank Hunt, and Phillip Hunt; and sisters, Beulah Newman Maughan (Jim), Mary Trevillian (Harry), and Emma Mae Cassell Merchut (Jim). Her surviving family includes her sons, Marvin Whitley (Mary) and Gary Whitley (Bonnie); brother, Mark Hunt (Iris); sister, Colena Richardson (Lonnie); sisters-in-law, Evelyn Hunt and Irene Hunt; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A period of visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the funeral homes chapel. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Roanoke. The Rev. Ivey Adams will officiate.
