Michael Allen Smith

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael A. Smith, a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Michael passed away at the age of 78 on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Salem, Virginia. Born on August 8, 1946, in Rumford, Maine. Michael proudly and honorably served in the United States Air Force, protecting his country. Michael lived a life marked by laughter, steadfast devotion to his family, and an unwavering loyalty that touched all who knew him.

Michael was preceded in death by his cherished grandparents, Walter and Trula Butler; his parents, Albion and Mary Smith; his brother, Timothy Smith; and his dear friend, Pumpkin, who held a special place in his heart.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Lynn Smith, with whom he shared a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Michael's legacy continues through his children: Sheri Doss, Jeremy Smith (Melanie), Anna Smith (Todd), and Matthew Smith (Rachael). He was a proud grandfather to Lindsay Brickey (Cody), Tyler Smith, Haley Smith (Chris), Madison Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Bentley Smith, and Hunter Smith; and a delighted great-grandfather to Lilian and Cason Brickey.

Michael is also survived by his siblings, Patrick Smith (Martha), Dennis Smith, and Jeannie Cox (Ray); as well as multiple nieces and nephews who will carry his memory in their hearts.

There will be an open visitation and a celebration of life on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, VA.
