We lost and Heaven gained another Angel today. Michael Daniel Helvey, Sr. passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 70 on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 doing what he loved most, playing basketball with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Helvey Vass; his father, Lester Daniel Helvey; and sisters, Diana Leigh and Sarah Katherine. Mike, a U.S. Navy Veteran, is survived by his devoted, loving wife and best friend, Diane Cundiff Helvey; daughter, Danielle Helvey Brugh; son Michael Daniel Helvey, Jr. and wife, Angela; grandsons, Wesley Andrew Brugh and wife, Jordan, and Austin Hunter Brugh; granddaughter, Elaina Marie Helvey; great-granddaughter, Parker Elizabeth Brugh; sister, Rhonda Helvey Pendleton; brother, Patrick Anthony Helvey; as well as many beloved brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Mike touched many lives in multiple ways, especially through coaching, showing his love, passion, and knowledge for the game. He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by all. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2015 in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2015, also in the chapel, with Dr. Matthew Crawford, Dr. Ron Marsh, and Pastor Bret Layton officiating.
