Mary Jane Taylor Wall, a warm, kindhearted Christian who loved her family more than anything, left this earth early Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at age 83.
Mary Jane was born in Nitro, W.Va., but also lived in Tazewell for many years before moving to Salem in 1980.
She graduated from the Lynchburg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1960, and served as a nurse for more than 60 years. She retired from Lewis-Gale after decades of service, but still worked part time at Snyders Nursing Home until 2022.
Mary Jane married the love of her life, Ronald Phillip Wall, at the Nitro Church of God on December 3, 1960. They were married for nearly 37 wonderful years before Ronald left this life too soon in 1997.
A devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Salem, Mary Jane served in a variety of roles over the years as part of the United Methodist Womens group. Christianity was not only the spiritual foundation on which she built her life, but a conduit that led to her meeting many lifelong friends.
Mary Jane loved working in the yard during her spare time, particularly on her flowerbeds. Scrapbooking was another activity that brought her joy for many years. She also enjoyed walking and going out to eat and shopping with friends.
Her faith in God was at the core of her being, but only part of what made her such a special person. In addition to being someone who would do almost anything for those in need, she was a woman who put her family above all else.
Mary Jane was a proud grandparent of five, and she loved them all dearly. Even as she struggled with her own declining health, her familys happiness, particularly the grandchildren, was always at the forefront of her mind.
She will be missed by all who knew her, and the world is a slightly less better place without her. And while Mary Jane is no longer with us on earth, the impact she made, and the lessons she taught us, will live on for years to come.
Mary Jane is survived by her sister, Martha Mae Taylor, of Nitro, W.Va.; her son, John (Jacqueline) and grandchildren, Sam and Colin, of Salem; her son, Greg (Wendy) and grandchildren, Braxton, Garrett, and Berkeley, of Salem; as well as family members in Delaware, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Mary Jane also had a large circle of beloved friends too numerous to mention from her more than 40 years in Salem.
She was predeceased by her father, Carl Lewis Taylor; her mother, Edna Burch Taylor; her husband, Ronald Phillip Wall; her sisters, Virginia Taylor and Katie Taylor; and her brothers, Carl Taylor, Paul Taylor, Robert Taylor, and John Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel located at 305 Roanoke Blvd. in Salem. The service to celebrate her life will begin at 2 p.m. with Pastor Alan Combs officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Sherwood Memorial Park. Following interment, there will be a small reception at First United Methodist Church located at 125 W. Main St. in Salem.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Mark Currie and staff and Good Samaritan Hospice for the excellent care they provided to Mary Jane.
