Mary Ann Sullivan, 86, of Salem and Smith Mountain Lake, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013.
She was born in Chicago, IL, a daughter of the late Alexander Jay, Sr. and Pauline Bochte Jay and had been an area resident for over 31 years. She was a registered nurse for over 65 years and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Salem, and Resurrection Catholic Church at Smith Mountain Lake. Mary Ann was very active in her parishes and community. She was a member of the Docent Guild of the Art Museum of Western Virginia (Taubman Museum of Art), was a chairman of Literacy Volunteers, and was active in home school associations and enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Jay and Alexander Jay, Jr., and by a grandson, Timothy Sullivan.
A loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Roger E. Sullivan, DDS; four sons, Dr. Joseph M. Sullivan, DPM, John A. Sullivan, Paul T. Sullivan and his wife Mary Pat, and Stephen G. Sullivan and his wife Kathie; four daughters, Eileen M. Sullivan, Marybeth Sullivan Bothmann and her husband Gary, Patricia M. Sullivan, and Catherine M. Nelson and her husband Gary; a sister, Lois Emmerling; brother, John W. Jack Jay; 14 grandchildren, Colin, Kurt, Jennifer, Emily, Matthew, Michael, Thomas, Alexandra, Jared, Samuel, Greg, Adam, Drew and Ryan, and three great-grandchildren, Evan, Grady and Lilah.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 2PM, Monday, February 4, 2013 at Resurrection Catholic Church 15353 Moneta Road, Moneta, VA 24121, with the family receiving friends for one hour prior to the service. Father Michael Herbert will officiate. The Rite of Committal will immediately follow in the Parish Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8PM, Sunday, February 3, 2013 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem.
