Mary Elizabeth Sisson

*Service time has changed* Mary Elizabeth Walthall Sisson, 87, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 23, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Maude Walthall; husband of 66 years, Asa Branham Sisson, Jr.; and son, Asa (Andy) Sisson. Mary was a dedicated nurse at the VA hospital in Salem for a great many years. After retirement, she devoted her time working at many nursing homes around Roanoke. She was a long time member of West End United Methodist Church in Roanoke. Mary enjoyed gardening, reading, and being with her family. Family left to cherish her memory include her children, Carol S. Eaton, Kathy S. Journell, and Frederick B. Sisson and wife Tina, all of Roanoke; sister, Frieda W. Hiner, of Troutville; grandchildren, Christy M. Latham, James B. Sisson, Stephen L. James, Troy R. Sisson, Joshua R. Eaton, Joseph A. Sisson, and Jessi M. Sisson; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 26, 2016 from 6 until 8 pm at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service to honor Marys life will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at 1 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Lyle Morton officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of South Roanoke Nursing Home for their loving care.
