Stony was born in Roanoke, VA. on June 4, 1920. She graduated from Jefferson High School and then attended Sweet Briar College, majoring in religious studies and theater. Early on, Mary Stone was given the nickname Stony, which she was fondly called by her friends and family. She married Julian H. Rutherfoord, Jr. in 1940.
Stony will be remembered as a gracious Southern lady who loved much and was devoted to God, her family, friends, and her community.
Stony was a Charter member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Roanoke. She was very involved in the Ecumenical Healing Ministry, and was a longtime member of the Roanoke Chapter of the Order of St. Luke the Physician, and served for a time as convener.
She was past president of the womens auxiliary at St. Johns Episcopal Church. Also, past president of the Churchwomen United Association, and served on the Spiritual Life Commission in the Episcopal Diocese under Bishop Marmion. She taught Sunday school at St. Johns Episcopal Church and led bible study classes at Church of the Holy Spirit.
Stony was a past member of the Jr. League, and very involved in the beginnings of the Childrens Theater in the mid 50s.
She was a former member of the Roanoke Valley Garden Club, and of the Roanoke Assembly. Mary Stone was also a member of the D.A.R, as was her mother.
Stony enjoyed the arts, visual and performing; being a grandmother, gardening, combing the beach for sea shells, walking the neighborhood, and reading a good book. She was a caring, loving mother, and a good friend, always having time to listen, and a willingness to help.
The family expresses deep gratitude to the exceptional nursing staff at Salem Terrace, Good Samaritan Hospice, and especially to private duty nurses Kim Bowman and Marilene Wani, for their devotion and loving care of Stony over the last 2 years.
