Mary Glenn Jenkins Passmore, widow of John Edwin Passmore (Pharmacist), died on Monday, April 29, 2013 in Salem, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arch C. Jenkins and Minnie Thompson Jenkins of Whitesburg, KY; sister, Genevieve Jenkins Farley; and in-laws, Dr. Charles Granford Passmore (Pharmacist, Kentucky and Virginia) and Mary Farmer Passmore. Mary Glenns surviving family includes a son, Jack Granford Passmore and wife, Janice Godard Passmore; daughter, Carol Frances Collier and husband, William Fletcher Collier; grandchildren, Brett Daniel Collier, Emily Collier Sengenberger and husband, Peter Sengenberger, and William Jeffrey Collier; and great-grandchildren, Tyler Daniel Collier and Jane Marlow Sengenberger. A Kentucky girl, born in Seco on October 16, 1922, she was raised in Whitesburg. She became a member of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, graduated from Eastern State Teachers College, and taught typing and shorthand at the Whitesburg High School from 1944 to 1946. She was described in a 1946 yearbook as sweet and understanding as anyone youll meet". On February 22, 1946, Mary Glenn married a Kentucky boy, her high school sweetheart, Jack, at the Lexington Presbyterian Church. This followed his return to the States after serving in WWII. She then worked as a bookkeeper in Stewarts Department Store and lived in Louisville and Shelbyville while Jack worked on his degree from the University of Kentucky. The family moved to Norton, Virginia where Jack joined his dad at the corner drug store, Passmores Pharmacy. Mrs. Passmore joined the community where her memberships included the Norton Presbyterian Church (Deacon, Women's Circle, and Women of the Church), Bridge Club, Lonesome Pine Country Club, Beta Sigma Phi, and lifetime memberships in the Green Thumb Garden Club and the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. The past several years, Mary Glenn resided at the Joseph C. Thomas Center in Salem. It was here that she met her dear friend and roommate, Lucille Akers. A loving daughter, sister, devoted wife, sympathetic teacher, patient and kind mother, proud grandmother and great-grandmother, a loyal friend, and consistent Christian, she merits the words of her Master, Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of Thy Lord. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Sandlick Cemetery in Whitesburg, KY with the Rev. Will Robinson officiating. A June memorial service at Salem Presbyterian Church will be posted by the funeral home at www.johnmoakey.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Salem Presbyterian Church at 41 E. Main Street in Salem, VA 24153, the Norton Presbyterian Church at 1230 Church Street, NW in Norton, VA 24273, or to the Graham Presbyterian Church at 18 Broadway in Whitesburg, KY 41858.
