Mary Helen Felty, 87, of Salem, passed quietly from this mortal life and entered into a state of rest and peace from this world at 9:18 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 with family by her side. She was an active member of the Salem Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints until she became afflicted with Alzheimers Disease and was no longer possible to stay in the home of her family. She was very beautiful from the inside out and never met a stranger. She was a woman of service and served with love willingly where she could. She was very talented musically and will be remembered singing in the old Methodist Church while playing the piano. She was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Margaret Alice Tolbert; husband, Eugene Felty; son, George Michael Hogston; daughters, Brenda Cuffley and an infant daughter; 4 brothers; 2 sisters; grandchildren, Roy Lee Coe, Jr., Kendra Woods, Stephen Tharpe, and Rita Coe; and several nieces and nephews. Her surviving family includes her children, Sand Hogston-Hooper and Tony Hogston; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family members. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Salem Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Wayburn Drive. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. Bishop Larry Robinson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Alzheimers Association at 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306 in Charlottesville, VA 22901 or to the DAV at 2381 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem, VA 24153.
