Mary Marjorie Canaday Douglas, born January 2, 1918, in Stanberry, Missouri, to Caleb Wade and Bertha Bliss Hines Canaday, died on December 18, 2013, at Snyder Nursing Home in Salem following a period of declining health. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Sidney Webb McElroy of Kansas City, Missouri; her second husband, James Howell Douglas, of Warrenton, Virginia; her brother, Daniel Arthur Canaday, of Palmdale, California; her sister, Thelma Ferne Canaday Pauley, of Denver, Colorado; and her sister-in-law, Alberta Ellis Douglas, of Nashville, Tennessee. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn Douglas Robertson and James Arthur Robertson of Salem, and by her grandson, James Douglas Robertson of Phoenix, Arizona. She was a faithful member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Salem, where she served as an office volunteer and altar guild member. An accomplished typist and stenographer, for much of her adult life she worked as a secretary, first with the WPA in Jefferson City, Missouri; later the Department of Agriculture in Kansas City, Missouri; McKay and McKay Realtors in McLean, Virginia; the Special Education Department of Fairfax County, Virginia, Schools, and, finallyfor twenty-two yearsthe Fairfax County Office of Public Affairs. The family thanks the staff of Snyder Nursing Home, Salem, and Dr. Marc Nevin for the care and compassion they showed while she lived there. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 27, at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Salem, Virginia, with the Rev. Jim Lively officiating. The family will receive visitors in the parish hall after the service. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
