Mary Elizabeth McCauley (Nono) Bush left this world on January 4, 2016 at the age of 98. Born in Salem, VA on October 12, 1917, she moved with her family to Baltimore, MD, where she married George W. Bush and had children Dottie and Diana. Then later she moved back to Salem and had Debbie. The family moved to Virginia Beach for 4 years, during which time she was instrumental in starting Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
She graduated from Roanoke College at the age of 50 and taught in the Roanoke County/Salem school systems for 14 years. At one time she tutored homebound students, Lutheran Childrens Home children, and refugees, writing a book about these experiences titled The World Came to Me. She was a member of DAR, UDC, Jr Womens Club of Salem, officer of several PTAs and a Girl Scout leader in Virginia Beach and Salem.
Nono was predeceased by her parents, Rev. Dr. J. Wm McCauley and Pearl Piper McCauley, brother William Piper McCauley, sister Margaret Belle Clayton, and her husband George W. Bush. Surviving are her daughters, Dorothy Francisco, Diana Davis and Deborah Myers, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons.
Family visitation will be held Friday, January 8 at 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Memorial service will be held at College Lutheran Church Saturday, January 9 at 10 AM with inurnment at East Hill Cemetery following the service.
