Martha Overton Brown Mayo, called Brownie by her husband of 57 years, died at age 89, on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at her home, Twin Springs Farm in Botetourt County. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Gibson and Georgie Brown, husband, Dr. Wiley Mayo, and brothers, Max and Alex Brown. She is survived by her children, Georgia Mayo, Kathleen Mayo Frampton and her husband Hal, Wiley Mayo, III and his wife Raye; eight grandchildren, Martha Mitchell, Nathan Frampton, Helen Gilmore, Ellen Gross, George Shute, Sarah Seufert, Benjamin Mayo, and Albert Mayo, and nine great-grandchildren. Martha, a native of Salem, was educated at Marion College, Virginia Commonwealth University and Hollins University where she studied fine art and design. She also studied under artists Katherine Chang Liu and the late Edgar A. Whitney. She traveled with artists groups to paint in England, France, Italy, Scotland and Ireland. In 2014, Martha was made an honorary member of the League of Roanoke Artists. For many years she has been a member of The Artist Way, an area group which encourages creativity. She said of her work, I strive to see, hear, and touch beauty and present this through my paintings. A faithful member of Salem Presbyterian Church, she was baptized there in 1924 and continued as a member until her death. One of her greatest joys was to devote each Wednesday to the SPC Womens Bible Study Group. Martha was a member of The Fort Lewis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Salem Historical Society. A celebration of Marthas life will be held at 2PM, Monday, October 27, 2014 at the Salem Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, Marthas wish was that donations be made to the Salem Presbyterian Church 41 East Main St. Salem, VA 24153.
