Martha Dodson Jane Akers

Martha (Jane) Dodson Akers, 81, of Salem, left this world on Wednesday, July 29, 2015. She was a dedicated wife and mother of 50 years. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Dorethia S. and Charles M. Dodson, Sr., of Hanging Rock, her husband, John J. Akers, Jr., brother, Charles Morton Dodson, Jr., and sister, Francis Carrol Beemer. She is survived by her son, Andrew J. Akers, and sisters, Macy Young, and husband, C.L., Betty Dalton, and Ann Campbell; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also cherished by several personal caregivers who served her in her later years. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, August 2, 2015 at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 3, 2015 at 2 pm in the funeral home's chapel. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. Pastor Chris Mitchell of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Salem will officiate. Special thanks to the staff of Carilion Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospice for their care over the past few weeks.
