Marie Owens Looney

Marie Owens Looney, 79, of Shawsville, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2011 at the Richfield Recovery and Care Center following an extended illness. She was born in Buchanan County on February 25, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Whetsel and Minnie Owens. She was a resident of Buchanan County before moving to Shawsville in 2005. Marie was a homemaker and the caretaker of her totally dependent son, Randy, for 52 years. She devoted her life to meeting his special care needs. Randy preceded her in death in 2007. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Pleais Looney; and her brother, Jerry L. Owens, of Vansant, VA. Marie is survived by sons, Steve Looney of Madison, NC, and Larry Looney and wife, Sandra, of Salem; grandson, Brad Looney and wife, Lorraine, of Roanoke; granddaughter, Jessica Bates and husband, David, of Madison, NC; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Owens of Roanoke; and sister-in-law, Wanda Owens of Vansant. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Richfield for their wonderful care of Marie and also thank Good Samaritan Hospice for their support to the family. A period of visitation was held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
