Mae Belle (Miller) Rettinger who was a long time resident of Glenvar, VA, age 97, died July 12, 2013 of natural causes at the Second Street Private Elder Care home in Roanoke,VA. The family will receive friends at the Oakey Funeral Home in Salem Virginia on Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Leonard Southern, pastor at Fort Lewis Baptist Church, will conduct a graveside service at Sherwood Memorial Park on Monday July 15, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Mae was born May 30, 1916, in Diana, Tennessee, to Joe and Josie Miller. She lived in Covington and Blacksburg prior to moving to the Glenvar area of Roanoke County in 1942. She and her husband John owned and operated the Rettinger Mercantile country store in Glenvar for more than 20 years. Later she worked at the Sportswear Mart in Salem for more than 26 years. Mae was the oldest active member of the Fort Lewis Baptist Church where she has been attending since 1942 for more than 71 years. Mae was preceded in death in 1979 by her husband of 42 years, John Harold Rettinger, her sister Lois George of Nashville, Tennessee, her brother John Will Wallace of Pulaski, Tennessee, and her brother Roy Miller of Linville Tennessee. Mae is survived by her sons and their wives: Wayne and Rita of Raleigh NC, David and Carolyn of Salem, and Jim and Wanda of Roanoke; her grand children Leigh Anne Rettinger and fianc Mark Davis of Portland, Oregon, and Ellen Blevins and husband David Chip of Salem. Surviving nieces and nephews are Barbara Guthrie and Jean Clark Elliott of Salem; Elaine King of Parisburg; Joyce Pettis of Lake Wales, Florida; Elizabeth Jennings of Harlingen, Texas; David Gravel and John Gravel of Lake Wales, Florida; Glen Wallace and John Harold Wallace of Columbus Georgia; and Kenny and Larry George of Nashville, Tennessee. Devoted friends Brenda Vanden Brook of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Muriel Suggs of Salem survive Mae. Sister-in-law Lavanda Millers of Linville, Tennessee, also survives Mae.
