Mabel Thornton Belcher went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the age of 83. Mabel had many accomplishments in her life. She served as president of the Roanoke Valley Woman's Club for multiple terms, was an early advocate for stricter laws against drunk driving in the Commonwealth, and was active and influential in the Roanoke and Virginia Democratic parties for many decades, earning the personal gratitude of senators, governors, and presidents for her tireless citizenry. She owned and operated numerous businesses during her life, including being a beautician for over 50 years. She was the owner of the Scottie-Lynn Beauty Salon in Salem and was loved and respected by her employees, and customers, who also became lifelong friends. The role that gave her the greatest joy in life was as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Granny was loved by all of her family for her constant devotion and love for all of her family. Mabel touched the lives of everyone who knew her. No one was a stranger to her. She lived a life of faith and witness to any who had the fortune to meet her. Mabel's life was a never-ending example of strength, courage, love, and compassion. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Thornton Ayers and husband, Tony; her son, Rod Belcher; her grandchildren, Angie Ciotti and husband, Billy, Melissa Ayers Edwards and husband, Dennis, Travis Ayers and wife, Sarah, Jonathan Belcher, and Emily Belcher; and by her great-grandchildren, Bailey LeBlanc, Brandon Ciotti, Laney Edwards, and Brianah Blankenship. The family expresses a sincere thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for their care and support and also to Rev. Butch Cooner for his contribution to the service.
