Lucille Swain Waid

Lucille S. Waid, 85, of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022, at her home. She was born on July 30, 1936, daughter of the late Irvin Lewis and Vulla Rupe Swain. Lucille was strong in her Christian faith. It was very important to her. She worked as a bookkeeper at E.K. Williams well into her 70s until we were finally able to convince her it was ok to retire. She stayed very active throughout her life and was an avid volunteer. Reading and sharing books with her friends was a favorite way to spend the day. Time with her family was always cherished. She adored her siblings and remained very close with them throughout her life. Lucille absolutely doted on her beloved canine companions, Shane and Ronin. She had a wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Betty Jo and Bonnie and her brothers Douglas, Cecil "Pete", and David. Family remaining to cherish in her memory includes her children, Barry Waid (Beverly), of Brunswick, GA, Cindy James (Frank), of Easton, KS, and Rory Waid (Erin), of Salem, VA; siblings, Billy Swain (Dorothy) and Diane Hill, all of Salem; grandchildren, Jesi Thomas (Jed), Cole James, and Cal James; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great friends. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 13, 2022, from 6 to 7 pm at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, in Salem. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, March 14, 2022, at 11:00 am in Swain Family Cemetery, 1945 Cambria St., NE, Christiansburg, Va.
