Obituary

Lorraine Colucci Murtaugh, age 91, passed away on October 15, 2026. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her generous heart, her quick wit and the seeds she sowed in the many lives she touched.

Lorraine was a respected middle school English educator in Arlington, Virginia, who understood that her role extended far beyond the classroom. She took a genuine interest in the lives of her students, offering guidance and encouragement. Her traditional Italian upbringing remained a cherished part of her life. She delighted in telling stories about her mother's home-made Italian meals served around a table filled with family and laughter. Her father was a master furniture maker, and Lorraine treasured each piece he crafted.

Music was another enduring joy in Lorraine's life. She loved to sing and play the piano, and music was a special part of the life she shared with her husband, Jim. He especially enjoyed listening to her play in the evenings, something they did often throughout their years together. After retirement, Lorraine learned to play golf so that she and Jim could spend time together in their golden years. Lorraine adored Jim, and she carried his memory with deep affection.

Above all, Lorraine was a woman of sincere Christian faith. A devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lorraine sought a life of service and thanksgiving. She read Scripture with reverence and with a remarkable voice that could command the attention of an entire room. Her faith was not merely something she professed; it was evident in her lifestyle, her commitment to her church, and her genuine interest in others.

Lorraine also knew how to enjoy life's simple pleasures. She loved art, reading, treasured her friendships, and appreciated a good cup of coffee or tea shared over engaging conversation. Her wit and sense of humor made her a delightful companion. An avid sports fan, she cheered for her teams, the Washington Nationals and Washington Commanders, through both the good and bad seasons.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Camillo and Antoinette Colucci, her sister, Emma Ann, her younger brother who died in infancy, Camillo, Jr., and her beloved husband, Jim Murtaugh. Though she leaves no surviving immediate family members, her legacy endures in cherished memories among the friends who loved her and the family she found in Christ at St. Paul's. May the seeds of faith, kindness, and love she sowed continue to flourish in the lives of all who knew her.

May the Lord receive Lorraine into His heavenly kingdom and grant her eternal rest.

A funeral service honoring Lorraine will be held on Friday, October 30, at 2 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Operating Fund of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 42 East Main Street, Salem, VA 24153.
