Lois Irene Nelson

Lois Irene Chase Nelson, 87, of Salem, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2016. She was born on Thursday, September 6, 1928, to Harold E. Chase and Alice Gerber Chase of Charlestown, N.H. She was a graduate of Charlestown High School and later married John L. Nelson, Jr. and resided in Mechanicsville where she was a devoted wife, homemaker, and mother of five. In 1967, the family moved to Salem. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Nelson, Jr.; her sister, Beverly Bascom; and beloved daughter, Margo A. Swortzel. Lois is survived by her children, Donna Hufnagel (John), Cheryl Nichols, John L. Nelson III (Rhonda), and Chris Nelson (Rita); sisters, Marion Rhodes of Ore. and Ann Patterson of N. Charlestown, N.H.; brother, Kenneth Chase of Charlestown, N.H.; grandchildren, Joe (Pam), Brian (Deanna), Justin (Paige), and Andrea Swortzel (Toby Estes), Jeremy Nichols, Molly Boothe (Darin), Sarah Shinault (Dan), John Lee Nelson IV, Jeremy Nelson, Kevin Nelson, and Jessica Quesenberry; and 15 great-grandchildren. A period of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
