Lloyd Smith, 92, of Roanoke left us peacefully on Monday afternoon surrounded by family. Lloyd was married for forty years to Dorothy Robertson Smith, who passed away in February 1986. He was preceded in death by his parents, Blanch Crockett Smith and Christmas Joe Smith; and sister Sheila Day Archer. He is survived by his children, Rebecca Smith Henry and her husband, Michael Henry of Chesterfield; Lewis Brent Smith and his wife, Gail Hayes Smith; Leslie Keith Smith; and Cameron Scott Smith and his wife, Shannon Fisher Smith, all of Salem. Grandchildren Christopher Thomas Smith, Ryan Patrick Smith; Matthew Owen Smith, Rachel Annalise Smith, and Noelle Lin Dian Smith. He is also survived by his sisters, Verona Hope Palmer and her husband, Peyton of Draper; and Treva Elaine Tolley of Annandale. Lloyd leaves behind his devoted friend through the years, Betty Dingus.
Lloyd was born in Pulaski and grew up in the Draper Valley. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Following the War, he married and settled down, working steadily as a land surveyor with Virginia Highway Department; Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern; C.B. Malcolm; and for many years, T.P. Parker & Son. He was a wonderful father who loved and provided for his family. His interests were wide; he loved history and politics. He enjoyed hiking and riding his bicycle well into his eighties and was quite proficient with both ice and roller skating. He worked endlessly with a green thumb in his yard, chopping wood and helping his neighbors in Medmont Circle. Special thanks to Jimmy and Sharon Mundy and staff, who took such good care of him in his final months.
