Lenore Butcher Kessel, 81, of Salem, VA, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 13, 2014. Lenore was born on December 19, 1932, in Dille, WV. She was the daughter of the late Richard Dee Butcher and Martha Belle Cart Butcher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis A. Kessel, her brothers, Harling Oliver Butcher and George Arling Butcher; her sisters, Lella Mae Butcher, Luella Marie Butcher and Rebecca Arthella Butcher; and her half- brother, Charles Edward Butcher. Surviving are her children, Linda Kessel Harris and husband, Randy of Midlothian, VA, Mona Ann Kessel Carver and husband, Cecil of Charlotte, NC, Gregory Louis Kessel and wife, Sharon, of Midlothian, VA, Jeannie Kessel of Arcata, CA; a brother, Lee Roy Butcher of Birch River, WV, sister Mary Ellen Butcher Taylor and husband Dewey, of Ravenswood, WV, six granddaughters, one grandson and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. After retiring from the Virginia Employment Commission she enjoyed travelling, especially Ireland and Toronto, Canada. She also volunteered with the Clothes Closet and later with The Community Christmas Store. She was an active member of Fort Lewis Baptist Church, volunteering wherever she was needed. The family would like to thank those who cared for her at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Richfield Recovery and Care Center and Good Samaritan Hospice for the care that they gave our Mother over the past four weeks. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 16, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8PM at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, VA. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 17, 2014, at 1:00 pm at Fort Lewis Baptist Church, Salem, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions made in her memory to your local animal shelter or food pantry, Good Samaritan Hospice or Hope Tree Academy.
