Lawrence Buck Hawkins, 87, of Salem, VA went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 21, 2010. He was born in Salem on January 23, 1923, son of Pack and Bessie Baker Hawkins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Cumb Hawkins; his brothers, Jr., Harry, Howard, and Park Hawkins; and his sisters, Ethel Hawkins, Ann Sis Whitley, Lois Toots Thomas and Beatrice Bee Martin. He is also preceded in death by special son-in-law, Roy M. Crowe, Sr.; special niece, Sandy Huffman; and special pastor, Ira Tolliver. His surviving family includes his son, Larry E. Hawkins and family; daughter, Gwen Crowe; grandson, Roy Crowe, Jr. and special friend, Katie McGuire; and great-grandson, Seth Michael Eads; and granddaughter, Caroline Frantz. Other surviving family members include sister, Jean Bryant; sister-in-law, Audrey Peach Hawkins; special nieces, Teresa Bryant, Whitney and Courtney Huffman, and Mary Ann Hollinsworth; special nephews, Randy and Scott Bryant; and additional nieces and nephews; and special friend and neighbor, Cory Moses. Also left to enjoy Bucks memory are countless friends. He was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He was a member of Mountain Pass Baptist Church. Buck retired from Spector Freight Lines, formally Hennis Frieght Lines. He served in the US Army during World War II and received numerous medals including the Purple Heart. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm at John M. Oakey and Son, Salem. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with Pastor Arley Sonny Miller officiating. The family is especially grateful to VA Medical Center employees for all of their special care and dedication.
