Lawrence Miller Goodwin, 91, of Salem, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, from Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. Born in Wytheville, Virginia, on Saturday, May 10, 1930, to the late Ernest and Ada Mozelle Goodwin, Lawrence is also preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, June Goodwin; his son, Steve Goodwin; and his sister, Margie Meredith. Lawrence exemplified a life of self-sacrifice and service. He began his career with the City of Salem as a 911 dispatcher, in 1985, and was ultimately promoted to 911 coordinator before his retirement nearly 30 years later. Lawrence served as a member of both the Taylor Masonic Lodge and the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club. He was a proud and patriotic flag-waver who always made sure our banner was waving appropriately. Lawrence greatly enjoyed being outdoors tending to his garden and flowers, which he took immense pride in, throwing in a fishing line when he had spare time or capturing beautiful photos with his camera. On weekends, he could be found tailgating with family and friends and cheering for the Hokies. He was a loving husband and father, and a doting grandfather to those he loved the most. Those left to treasure his memory are his daughter, Teresa Bland, and husband, Palmer; grandchildren, Kyle Goodwin and wife, Samantha, Emily Goodwin Ashley Garland and husband, Jay, Tim Bland, Tara Jones and husband, Darrell; great-grandson, J.P. Garland; sister, Neta Gray and husband, Jim; daughter-in-law, Paula Goodwin as well as many extended family and friends.
