L. Madie Palmer Alls, 83, of Salem passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013. She was born on April 20, 1930 in Roanoke County to the late Luther M. and Audrey C. Palmer. She was a lifetime member of Green Hill Church of the Brethren. She was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School. She was employed with the Salem High school for 13 years prior to retiring, and also spent 28 years as an employee of Valleydale prior to her retirement there. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed playing softball as she continued her involvement with the sport well into her 40s. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin J. Alls; brothers, George, Clinton, Owen, Coolidge, Eugene, and Frankie Palmer; sisters, Learleen P. Obenchain, Mary Marie Horten, and Foster sister, Ursula Uthes. Family left to cherish her memory include her brother, O.D. (Bill) Palmer and wife, Dorothy; special nephew, Tony Palmer, who she raised as her own son. She was also a special aunt to numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. Numerous other family members and a multitude of friends also survive. Madie will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son funeral home in Salem. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Shawn Tanner and Pastor Doug Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Burial Park in Roanoke. In lieu of flowers the family requests for donations to be made to the Green Hill Church of the Brethren, 2699 Harborwood Rd., Salem, VA 24153-5717, or to Fort Lewis Rescue Squad, 3915 West Main ST., Salem, VA 24153.
