Karen Shawver Waterfield, 53, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, Christmas Eve, December 24, 2012.
She was the only child of the late Carl and Minnie Shawver. Carl Shawver came to Salem to play ball for the Red Sox just after World War II, where he had been a Marine sergeant fighting in the Pacific. In Salem, he met and married Minnie Wygal. Karen was born August 7, 1959. Her mother, Minnie, had five brothers and four sisters, all now deceased. In addition to her parents and aunts and uncles, Karen was preceded in death by her only child, Carl Cameron, and cousins, James Slayton, Larry Francisco and Randy Francisco.
She is survived by her brother Bob, two aunts, Fran Wygal and Margie Lee Wygal; and twenty-three first cousins. Karens cousins live mainly in Salem and Roanoke, and some also reside in the states of Connecticut, Florida, Arkansas, Washington and California.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM, Friday, December 28, 2012 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. The Rev. Thomas Lee of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8PM, this evening, Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Blue Ridge Mountains Council, 2131 Valley View Blvd. NW, Roanoke, VA 24012.
