Johnny Ray Melvin, 54 of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2012. Prior to falling ill, he was employed by Plantation Pride Bakery where he provided 20 years of dedicated and faithful service as a baker. Friends and family remember him for his passion of trading cars as well as his ability and enjoyment of tinkering on them. Above all, he will be remembered most as a loving husband, father, and grandfather as he has always had his family at heart. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Millard & Rachael Lewis. He was survived by his wife of 35 years, Shelby Lawrence Melvin; Mother, Elizabeth Lewis Elbing; Daughters, Joni Moss and Jeannie Melvin; sons in heart, William Moss and Jamie Hoback; grandchildren, Jasmine, Tyler, Hannah, Makayla, Kaleb and Chrystian; brothers, Scott Melvin & wife, Janet, Jerry Melvin & friend, Judy and Carl Melvin & wife, Cathy; sister, Sandy Stover, special friend, Wesley Price; special nephews, Randy Melvin and Brian Melvin; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts uncles, and friends also survive. The family will receive friends on Friday, September 7, 2012 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, where a memorial service will follow starting at 6 p.m. on the same evening. A guestbook is available under Mr. Melvins name by visiting www.johnmoakey.com.
