John Michael Soja

John Michael Soja, 67, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014. He was born on March 12, 1947 in LaPorte, IN to the late Stanley and Bernice Vlock Soja. John will be remembered as a man that enjoyed helping others in their time of need. He loved people and was known as a man that had never met a stranger! Cooking was a favorite activity in his life, and he was well known for his polish dishes at dinner time! He also enjoyed fishing, especially when his sons tagged along. John was a member of the American Legion for numerous years and was an active member of the St. Elias Maronite Catholic Church in Roanoke. Above all, John will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and friend to all whom knew him. In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by his uncle, Andy Vlock. Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his wife of 16 years, Jan Soja; sons, Jeffrey Michael Soja and wife, Courtney of Noblesville, IN, and Seth Vincent Soja and wife, Jessica of Chicago, IL; step-children, Allison Schmitt and husband, Mark of Forrest, VA, Kurt Guerrero and wife, Evelyn of Aurora, IL, Andre Guerrero and wife, Laura of California, and Jeanne also of California; sisters, Francene B. Collins and husband Chuck of Park Ridge, IL, and Christine Thomas and husband, Dwight of Ocala, FL; four grandchildren; and special friend, Charlie Johnson. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 10, 2014 from 6 until 8 p.m. at St. Elias Maronite Catholic Church, 4730 Cove Road, NW, Roanoke, VA. Funeral services to honor Johns life will be conducted on Friday, July 11, 2014 at 10 a.m., at the church, with Father Kevin Beaton officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 5550 Bagging Plant Rd., Dublin, VA, where military rights will be conducted.
