John Robert Miller Sr.

John Robert Miller died Thursday, December 1, 2022. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed by all that knew and loved him. John moved to Salem, VA in 1984, with his wife and son to take a newly created position at the Salem VA Medical Center to bring information technology to the facility. He retired from the VA in 2011. John was born in Winchester, VA on July 2, 1953, but lived in many places growing up. He joined the Navy in 1972 and served for six years. He served briefly in Vietnam in 1973. He graduated from Christopher Newport University and achieved an MBA from Old Dominion University. His favorite activities were golf, reading, hiking, and spending time with his family. He was active in the community where he volunteered with the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club and Salem VA Credit Union, where he served on the board for many years. John is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Eugene and Jane Roupe Miller; and his wife, Peggy Miller. He is survived by his son, Jack Miller; grandsons, Luke, and Jacob Miller; sister Debra Nyce; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem.
