John Robert Goodman Sr.

John R. Goodman, Sr., 90, of Salem, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2014. He was born on April 7, 1924 in Smyth County, Va. to the late Robert and Mary Smothers Goodman. He was a proud veteran serving in the United States Army, during WWII. Following the war, he became employed with the railroad as a welder. He was a faithful employee for 30 plus years of dedicated service prior to retirement. He loved music and could play about any instrument you asked him to play. Above all, dad will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 plus years, Gladys Bowles Goodman; son, Danny Goodman, brothers, A.F. Goodman, Bill Goodman, James (Bunk) Goodman, Jack Goodman, Alton Goodman and Eddie Goodman; and sisters, Helen Albert and Beth Meadows. Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his sons, John R. Goodman, Jr., and wife Shirley, and Michael Goodman and wife, Connie; brother, Neal E. (Dave) Goodman; sisters, Shirley Catron, Ruth Nicewander and Janie Woody and husband, Kenneth; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Peggy Wright. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 3 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son in Salem. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the DAV of Roanoke, 116 N Jefferson St, Roanoke, Va., 24016.
