Joeanne Akers Cox

Joeanne Akers Cox, 71 of Salem, passed away on Saturday, December 22, 2012. She was born on February 25, 1941 in Montgomery Co., VA to the late Warren and Marie Saunders. She will be remembered as someone that had a tremendous work ethic as she never left a job unfinished; as someone who loved planning family gatherings, as she loved spending time around those she loved, but above all, she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will truly be missed. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cox was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Saunders. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Carson Cox; sons, Ricky Akers and wife, Joyce, and Fred Akers and wife, Penny; daughter, Diane Guthrie and fianc, Ralph Lovern; brothers, Cecil Saunders and wife, Debbie, Arnold Saunders and Donald Saunders; sisters, Bea McNeil and husband, Morris, and Frances Matz and husband, Larry; grandchildren, Michael Stafford, Kevin Stafford, Amanda Akers and Megan Akers. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center for the love, care and commitment rendered to Mrs. Cox during her stay there. Funeral services honoring Mrs. Cox life will be conducted on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Gardens also in Salem. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m also at the funeral home.
