Jerry Lee Akers passed away on Friday, November 13, 2020, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, with his beloved wife, Vickie Maxey Akers at his side.
Jerry was born on May 2, 1955 in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Gordon L. and Julia O. Akers.
He graduated from Alleghany District High School, Shawsville, VA, in 1972, and hired out with Norfolk and Western Railway in 1973, continuing there as a machinist until his retirement in 2015.
Jerry was a hotrod enthusiast who loved travelling to car shows up and down the east coast. In earlier days, he raced his own dragster at regional strips.
He loved to play the guitar with the Praise Team at Riverside Evangelical and at Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center. He enjoyed relaxing with his feline friend, Kitty, who liked to curl up behind his head and snuggle on a hard day.
Jerry never met a stranger and his friends will remember him for his kindness in thought, word, and deed.
In addition to his wife of 32 years, Jerry leaves behind his son, Jesse Akers of Porto, Portugal; brothers and sisters-in-law Lynn and Sandy Akers, of Salem, and Chuck Akers and Lisa Stoneman, of Roanoke; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 16, 2020, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Riverside Evangelical Methodist Church, in Salem.
A celebration of Jerrys life will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 2 p.m., at Riverside Evangelical Methodist Church, with Pastor Brian Gordon officiating.
