James Wheeler "Jimmy" Owens

James Jimmy Wheeler Owens, 77, of Salem, Va., passed away on Monday, May 25, 2020. Jimmy was born in Henderson, N.C. He was a remodeler for most of his life, primarily as a painter and wallpaper hanger. He loved to fish and watch football and basketball. At one point many years ago, he even served the Salem Junior League boys basketball team as assistant coach. Preceding him in death were his parents, George Astor and Mildred Elizabeth Mitchell Owens; brother, Bobby Owens Sr.; and brother-in-law, B.G. Edwards Jr. His surviving family includes his sister, Betty O. Edwards; aunt, Pauline Canaday; nephews, Gill Edwards, Keith Edwards, and Bobby Owens Jr.; niece, Cathy Tabor (Butch); many great-nephews and great-nieces; and a pet companion, Bella. Special appreciation is expressed to Kindred Hospice for its loving care of Jimmy. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2020, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va. Upon processing to Sherwood Memorial Park, a graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. with Pastor Roger Counts officiating.
