James R. Moore, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2011.
He was born in Gary, Indiana, a son of the late James W. Moore and Louise Jones Moore and had been an area resident for over 75 years. A US Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, he operated Mason Valley Estates Nursery for over 30 years, was a welding instructor at Virginia Western Community College, and retired from Wells-Fargo in 1999. He was a member of Taylor Masonic Lodge 23, the DAV, VFW and was a Benefactor Life Member of the NRA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Sissy Holmes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carolyn Lambert Moore; two sons, Michael Moore and Kevin Moore; three daughters, Rose Marie Smigla and her husband Greg; Dr. Lisa Moore, and Teresa Davis and her husband Brandon, as well as five grandchildren, Katy, Joey, Tommy, Carly and Alyssa, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Saturday, June 25, 2011 in the Chapel of John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem. The Rev. Roy E. Kanode will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park with graveside military honors being afforded by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Military Honors Team. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
