James Oscar Nunley Jr.

James Oscar Nunley, Jr., 87, of Salem and formerly of Baltimore, Md., went to Heaven to continue his work and be reunited with his one true love, Ele, on Sunday, October 9, 2016. He was quite the perfectionist, and it showed most in the way he cared for his home. James loved learning, and put his acquired skills to practice with his continual improvements not just to his own property, but also as he helped his neighbors. He was also a devoted member of Fort Lewis Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his parents, James Oscar, Sr. and Hazel (Cookie) Lyons Nunley; wife of 57 years, Eleanor Rose Myers Nunley; sons, James Edward and Steven Nunley; stepson, Timothy Patrick Lyons; and beloved Shadow Dog. His surviving family includes his children, David Lee Nunley, Sr., Kevin Michael Nunley, Sr. and wife, Janet, and Kimberly Sweeney and husband, William; sister, Annette Edmondson; 8 grandchildren, including Kevin Michael Nunley, Jr., James David Nunley, Sr., and Matthew Douglas Sweeney; and many beloved great-grandchildren. The family extends a special thanks to the Brookdale Roanoke Memory Care Facility for the loving care and devotion shown. A period of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2016 in the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2016 in the funeral homes chapel with Rev. Leonard Southern officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, also in Salem. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association at 3959 Electric Road in Roanoke, Va. 24018.
