James William Harrell

James "Jim" William Harrell, 77, of Salem, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024. Born on March13, 1947, to the late Arthur B. and Sarah Neal Harrell, he is also preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Butterworth Harrell; brothers, Arthur Ron Harrell and Thomas Harrell; and sisters, Negatha Shumate, Frances Hammons, and Dorothy Henderson.

Jim was one of the original "Bradshaw Boys". A lifelong jokester, he was always pulling somebody's leg and telling the funniest jokes and stories. Jim was quite the storyteller and had a knack for weaving together the best tales. He loved being outdoors and walking in the woods or hiking trails, always keeping watch for "piediddles" and Bigfoot. He enjoyed wood working and making heirloom handicrafts. Jim loved good music and spending time with his family and friends, sharing a meal or playing games together. Above all, he adored his family and was a loving father and grandfather, a devoted husband and a loyal friend.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Tracy Strickland and her husband, Jim, and Amy L. Harrell; grandchildren, Morgan Hawkins and fiance', Jordan, and Liam Harrell; great-grandchildren, Aurora Hawkins and Bane Hawkins; sister, Sue Holt, brother-in-law, Randy Butterworth; sister-in-law, Donna Harrell, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation on Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the Upper Parlor of John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem. A private interment will be held at a later date.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the ICU staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care given to both Jim and to their family during such a difficult time.
