James William Barr, 82, of Salem, passed away on Saturday January 18, 2014. Jim was born in Marion, VA a son to the late Walter R. and Ethel Barr. Along with his parents Jim was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosa Lee Bowling and Joyce Daniels. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean Conflict, earning the Bronze Star, Silver Star, and the Purple Heart, and Jim was also life member of the D.A.V. Jim worked several years for Hennis-Spector as an over the road truck driver, and he became a steward, trustee, and vice president of the Teamsters, Local 171. Jim enjoyed music, and meeting new people and never meeting a stranger, he loved to talk, and take walks; he was a member of the Taylor Masonic Lodge, Salem. Left behind to cherish his memories are his daughters, Vickie Gearheart and husband Tom, Pam Barr, Kristie Miller and husband Mark; his sons, John Harmon and wife Betsy, and Steve Barr and their mother, Mary Ellen Barr; grand children, Eric Barr, Christopher Barr, Paige Harmon, Joanna Harmon, Phillip Gearheart, Megan Miller, Hunter Barr, Garrette Barr, Patrick Barr, and Averie Barr; four great-grandchildren; five grand dogs; and a host of other family and friends. The family will receive friends on Monday January 20, 2014 from 5 to 7 pm at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem and a service to honor the life of, James William Barr will take place on Tuesday January 21, 2014 at 2 pm in the chapel of the funeral home, Pastor Tim Gearheart will officiate, internment will be private.
