Jacob Dexter (J.D.) Neighbors II, age 60, of Salem, was softly and tenderly called by Jesus to receive his heavenly reward of eternal life on Thursday, May 5, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.
J.D. was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandpa, son, brother, and friend. He cherished his children, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He always gave of himself to others. J.D. never met a stranger and was friendly to everyone.
J.D. retired from General Electric after 40 years of faithful employment. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Masons Cove Fire Department for 30 years. J.D. loved being busy and working outdoors. He enjoyed yard work, tinkering with cars, and soaking up the sun while listening to the oldies.
J.D. was a member of First Evangelical Methodist Church in Salem. Throughout his illness, his strength and trust in the Lord never faltered. His enduring faith was a true testimony to everyone who knew him.
J.D. was preceded in death by his father, Jacob Dexter Neighbors. He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Neighbors; children, Jacob (Jay) Neighbors III and wife, Christy, Lori Lauer and husband, Jake, Jason Neighbors, and Sarah Neighbors; grandchildren, Jacob Neighbors IV, Hannah Neighbors, and Kiersten Lauer; mother, Dorothy Neighbors; sister, Linda Woods; brother, Mack Neighbors and wife, Marcia; as well as other numerous family members and friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 8, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the First Evangelical Methodist Church in Salem with Pastor Brian Gordon officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Helping Hands Fund at First EMC at 1920 Lucas Street in Salem, Virginia 24153.
