Isaac Marvin Dyer, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014.
He was born in Roanoke, a son of the late Isaac Martin Dyer and Ethel Tyler Dyer and had been an area resident all of his life. He attended Jefferson High School and was a graduate of the National Radio Institute of Washington, DC. Marvin enjoyed working; as a young man he operated his own ice cream business, worked at the Rialto Theatre, raised chickens, delivered telegrams, and painted for many years with his father, son and brother-in-law. He was employed for over 30 years with Norfolk & Western Railroad prior to retirement and proudly served in the Virginia National Guard.
Marvin was a long time member of Ridgewood Baptist Church, cherished his family and was a role model of the Lords will. He enjoyed hobbies such as: working on small engines, repairing T.V.s and was a great historian of the Roanoke Valley. Marvin (Grampa/ Papoo) was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, who spent his last years caring for his loving wife of 65 years, Opal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Huston Dyer; three sisters, Irene Polumbo, Dorothy Hall and Loretta Boyd, and by a grandson, Fletcher Hancock Dyer.
He is survived by his loving wife, Opal Musselman Dyer; two sons, M. Wayne Dyer and his wife Barbara of Johnson City, TN and Reginald Reggie Dyer and his wife Anna of Salem; five grandchildren, Carrie Dyer and her fianc Richie Rutledge, Sarah Quesinberry and her husband Jacob, India Dyer, Teddy Dyer and his wife Chelsea, Daniel Dyer, and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Quesinberry.
Funeral services will be held at 12PM, Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son. Pastor James Armentrout and Rev. Roy Kanode will officiate. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8PM, Friday, August 1, 2014 at the funeral home.
