Ira Clyde Deyerle, 78, of Salem, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, June 17, 2019. He was born on September 9, 1940 in Roanoke, Va. to the late Walter Elmer, Sr. and Eva Jeanette Rutherford Deyerle. Ira graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in the class of 1958. He later received his higher education from the University of Virginia where he became a diehard fan of the UVA Cavaliers sports program. He was a 50 plus year member with the Taylor Masonic lodge 23, located in Salem and retired from G.E. Electric Drive Systems after 30 plus years of dedicated service as a software engineer. He was a family genealogist and historian for the Deyerle Family Association. Ira loved walking along the beach as much as he loved the Blue Ridge Mountains. Above all, Ira will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him. He will be missed! In addition to his parents, Ira was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Judy Marie Coggins Deyerle; daughter, Eva Marie Deyerle; siblings, Walter Elmer Deyerle, Jr., Joyce Matchette, Faye Sechrist, and June Thomas Fisher. Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his son, Russell Deyerle and wife, Stacy, and granddaughter Emily Nicole Deyerle of Henrico, Va.; sisters, LaVerne Deyerle, of Salem, Va., Sherrye May, of Abingdon, Va., and Patricia Turner, of Lynchburg, Va.; special friend Linda Koogler of Raphine, Va.; chosen daughter Mary Duffy of Earlysville, Va., and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and in-laws. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 6 until 8 pm at the John M. Oakey and Son funeral home in Salem. Funeral services to honor Iras life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, 125 West Main St., Salem, Va., with Pastor Mike Houff officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The church will host a luncheon following the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to Dr. Ryan Gentzlers research at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center at UVA and mailed to UVA Health Foundation, PO Box 800773, Charlottesville, VA 22908. Alternatively, Ira was dedicated to his granddaughter Emilys education, so donations can also be made directly to the family for an educational fund.
