Howard William (Bill) Boise, Jr. of Salem, VA, passed away on August 24, 2012, at age 92, of multiple myeloma. He was born in Plainfield, NJ, son of the late Howard W. Boise, Sr. and Josephine Chase Boise. In 1992, Bill Boise and his wife Ann retired to Academy Street in Salem, VA. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Ann Boise and four daughters: Josephine Boise Budell; Linda Boise and her husband Steven Goldberg; Gretchen Boise of Salem; Heidi Boise and her husband Dennis Montagna; six grandchildren: Lesley. Chase, Emily, Sylvan, Nicholas, Katherine and nephew Michael MacLaury. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Meredith MacLaury. Bill graduated from The Lawrenceville School in NJ in 1938. In 1942, Bill received his degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studied business management and chemical engineering and was crew captain of the MIT rowing team in 1941. During the war years, he worked at H. Koppers Company in Chicago, where he met his wife at a dance in 1943. The couple moved to Plainfield, NJ, where Bill joined his father's stationery business, H. W. Boise, Inc. Bill took over the business and served as president until his retirement in 1992. In Plainfield, Bill was a member of several local organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and was a board member of the YMCA. After moving to Salem, VA, Bill and Ann became supporters of The Grandin Theater, the Salem Historical Society and the Salem Garden Club, taught English as Global Volunteers in Poland, participated in Elderscholar at Roanoke College, and went on trips with Elderhostel. Neighbors will remember Bill as the gentleman with a cane who walked from home every day to visit his wife at Snyder Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 7, 2012, at the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, September 6 from 5 to 8 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad, 201 S. Broad Street, Salem, VA 24153.
