Herman Anderson DeHart, 83, of Salem, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2017. Herman was born on Friday, September 29, 1933, in Altavista. He worked for Elliott Buick and Royal Buick for many years as an auto technician. His church membership was held at Bethel Baptist Church in Salem, and was also a member of its Maranatha Sunday School class. He enjoyed sports, fishing, woodworking, and his garden. He was also a faithful bowler with the Lee-Hi Seniors Bowling League. Preceding him in death were his parents, W. Alvis and Edith DeHart; and his first wife, Marlene Ellis DeHart. His surviving family includes his wife of 36 years, Joyce C. DeHart, Salem; children and their spouses, Susan and Corkey Bowles, Salem, Rev. Duane and Mary Lou Dehart, Fredericksburg, and Robert and Peggy Underwood, Roanoke; grandchildren, Courtney Bowles, Christopher Bowles, Amber Phelps, Taylor DeHart, Claire DeHart, Kelsey Underwood and fianc, Andy Sulser, and Wesley Underwood; great-grandson, Elijah Phelps-Bowles; brother, Leon DeHart and wife, Margie; sisters-in-law, Mildred Pruett, Margaret (Peggy) Gray, Marie Collins, Judy McDaniel and husband, Russell, and Gladys Beckner and husband, Gary; brothers-in-law, Melvin Collins and wife, Helen, and Lionel Ellis; and many extended family members, friends, and neighbors. The family extends special thanks to the staff at Richfield Rehab for all of their caring and support during this difficult time. A period of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, 2017, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 14, 2017, at Bethel Baptist Church in Salem with Rev. Hilton Jeffreys officiating. An additional time of visitation will take place one hour prior. Interment will take place at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bethel Baptist Building Fund at 1601 South Colorado Street in Salem, Va. 24153.
