Henry Leamon Underwood, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, at the age of 82, at the Davis & McDaniel Veterans Care Center. He was born on April 26, 1942, in Rocky Mount, VA to the late Roy Martin Underwood and Betty Lolene Holland Underwood. In addition to his parents and his wife Estelle Jean Hodges Underwood, he was preceded in death by his brother Stanley Lewis Underwood and his nieces, Tammie Haga Rutan and Kathy Marie Underwood Wampler.

Henry served his country as a member of the United States Army. He retired from Yokohama Tire after 38 years of dedicated service. He was a faithful and devoted member of the Friendship Baptist Church in SC. He loved to fish, garden and landscape, create crafts using his creative wood working skills and loved looking at classic cars and collecting the classic cars in die cast. Henry was a beloved father and brother. He was kind and compassionate and was loved by everyone who met him. He was a dedicated hardworking man who was devoted to God and his family.


His family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the nurses (Kara, Kristy, Leslie and more), nursing assistants and staff at the Davis & McDaniel Veterans Care Center. Their love, compassion and care for him eased the difficulty of his health declining. Everyone loved him there and will truly miss him. Also, would like to express their appreciation for the love and compassion to his care givers Betty Montgomery and Lisa Turman who tirelessly helped him while living at Elm Park Estates.


He is survived by his loving daughter, Michelle Renee' Underwood; his beloved sister, Reva Dian Dudley; his granddaughter, Katlin Danielle Thompson Tuck (Keagan); his grandson, Brian Michael Thompson (Marie); and his great-granddaughter, Caroline Thompson and many nieces and nephews. Henry also leaves behind his dear friend and buddy who could always make him laugh no matter how he was feeling, Billy Steele.


A visitation will be held on Friday, December 27th, 2024, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home at 305 Roanoke Blvd. Salem, VA 24153. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. followed by a graveside service at the Dillon Cemetery in Glade Hill, VA.
