Henry Eskell Mitchem, 87, was welcomed into Heaven by Jesus on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

He was born June 29, 1939, in Jenkinjones, WV, to the late Burbridge Eskill and Annie Dean Casey.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Nellie Gray Wright Mitchem; daughter, Annie Mae Mitchem; son, Franklin Eskell; granddaughter, Jessican Worthington.

Henry is survived by his son, Charles (Mary); daughters, Elizabeth Doss and her husband, Sammy, Nellie Sparks, Lucy Gobble and her husband, Jake; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-great-grandchildren; and granddaughter, Samantha Sparks, whom he loved and raised as his own.

He was a loving father and a great Papaw to all his grandchildren. Henry never met a stranger, and everyone was always welcomed in his home.

Henry worked construction for over 40 years at Adams Construction, where they called him "Peanut." Henry loved the outdoors. Fishing and hunting were his favorite passions. Henry was good with his hands and built and repaired many things in his lifetime. He was funny and had wisdom that he shared through his many stories. He loved the Lord and looked forward to seeing his loved ones again.

A heartfelt thank you to the Good Samaritan Hospice for their love and care during the last weeks of his life. To his granddaughter Samantha and her fiancé Derrik, thank you for always being there through everything.
