Hazel Geraldine Newman

Hazel Geraldine Newman, 96, of Salem, Va., passed away on July 18, 2023. She was born October 14, 1926, in Botetourt County Va., a daughter of the late James O. Newman and Mary Smith Newman. Hazel was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church, and she was employed by the Roanoke County Health Department for 30 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold G. Newman, Hugh M. Newman, Howard C. Newman, and Harry L. Newman; and one nephew, Greg Newman. Hazel is survived by two sisters, June Paxton of Roanoke, Va., and Edna Harris of Lexington, Va; nieces, Sue Phipps (Al) and Karen Newman Fridy (Jim); nephews, Steve Harris (Lisa), Robert Paxton (Cathy) and Paul Newman; several great nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, Paul Voorhees. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, Va., with Pastor Janet Chisom officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Va. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the service hour.
