Hazel Conner Horne, 80, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 7, 2014 surrounded by family and friends. She was born on November 27, 1933 in Salem to the late Ira Shelton and Nannie Poff Conner. Hazel had been employed as a cafeteria worker by Roanoke County schools, and had spent the majority of her time at Glen Cove Elementary prior to her retirement. She was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Salem and was fully aware that she would be in Heaven for when the Lord called her home! She enjoyed listening to gospel music, gardening, bird watching, working with flowers, and yard selling was certainly a favorite past time. However spending time with her family was at the top of her list! Hazel was considered a Favorite Mom to everyone! In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, James C. Horne; cousins/brothers, Aaron Conner, Noel Conner, Earl Conner and Calvin Conner; and cousin/sister, Lula Conner Anderson. Family remaining to cherish her memory includes her daughters, Patsy Leffler and husband, James, and Joan Darlene Leonard; brothers, Ira Conner and Arlington Conner; sister, L.V. Lowe; grandchildren, Dallas Colley, Todd Glass and Aaron Leffler; great-grandchildren, Noah Colley and Ethan Colley; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family would like to offer a special thank you to cousins Sandy and Kenny Conner for all the love and care that was given to mom during her illness. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 11, 2014 from 6 until 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son funeral home in Salem. Funeral services to honor Hazels life will be conducted on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Garnett Jr. Westmoreland officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Burial Park in Roanoke. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to the Faith Baptist Church Ladies Fellowship, 900 E. 8th street, Salem, VA 24153.
