Harry William Mabes, 87, of Salem, died on Friday, May 2, 2014. Mr. Mabes was retired from General Electric and was a member of First Christian Church in Salem. He was the son of the late Harry B. and Rachel Wills Mabes. Also preceding him in death was his first wife, Ida Eddy Mabes. His surviving family includes his wife, Lottie Owen Mabes, of Salem; daughter, Betty Jo Schultz and husband, Carl, of Salem; sons, Dennis Mabes and wife, Karen, of Blacksburg, and Kenneth Mabes and wife, Catina, of Salem; grandchildren, Carl Schultz and wife, Dayna, Lukous Schultz, Dana Mabes, Bradford Mabes, Christopher Mabes and wife, Kelsey, Maellen Mabes, Kelsey Mabes, Santana Meredith, and Baylor Mabes; great-granddaughters, Brandi and Jasmine Schultz; brother, Ralph Mabes and wife, Doris, of Salem; sister, Marie Dent and husband, Donald, of Roanoke; and extended family members including Richard, Jr. and Ursula Owen, Carol Loveless, and Judy and Jim Fisher and their children. A sincere thanks is expressed to the Virginia Veterans Care Center and their employees for the excellent care these past fourteen months. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem. A service of interment will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. A memorial service will then follow at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, also in Salem. The Rev. Dan Netting will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the church at 712 Front Avenue in Salem, VA 24153.
