Harold (Harry) Melvin Clayton, 70, of Salem, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Harry moved to Salem from Chicago in May 2005 and has been a vibrant, integral part of the Salem community since that time. Harry was a Chicago Bulls, Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan. One of Harrys proudest achievements was 27 years of sobriety which he celebrated on July 8th of this year. He was very active in many local chapters of Alcoholics Anonymous and was always willing to mentor and chat with anyone who he felt he could help. He was very loving and generous, and often randomly gifted people with small items that reminded him of them. Harry was extremely proud to be an American and served in the US Army. Harry was preceded in death by his father Levy Clayton. He is survived by his mother Ethel Roehsel, his sister Virginia Nowlin and his brother Carl Clayton as well as a niece and numerous nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. We would like to thank the staff of the ICU at the VA Hospital for the care that they offered to him during his final days.
A memorial service to honor and remember Harry will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the John M. Oakey & Son chapel at 305 Roanoke Boulevard in Salem.
