Haden Eugene Gene Niday, 73, of Masons Cove, went to his heavenly father on Saturday, November 5, 2022, after a lengthy illness. Born in Craig County, Virginia, on June 18, 1949, to the late Hayden and Tootie Fink Niday, sister, Mary Sissy Davis; brother, Gary Jerry Niday; uncles, Rob Niday and Bulger Niday; aunts, Ruth Wimmer, Elizabeth Huffman, Gertrude Niday, and Maude Mennix; his wifes parents, Glovern and Elsie Palmer, brothers-in-law, Lonnie Palmer and Woodrow Palmer, and sister-in-law, Chekita Young. He is also preceded in death by his stepson, Rellis Phipps; step-grandson, Ryan Palmer.
Gene loved being outdoors hunting and fishing and working on cars and trucks. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Roanoke County Schools and was a dedicated employee for over 23 years. Gene adored his family, especially his wife of 46 years, Jeanette, and loved all of the family get-togethers throughout the years. Friends and family found great comfort in his smile.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Jeanette Palmer Niday; son, Chris Niday and wife, Dawn; granddaughters, Brittany Phipps and Danielle John and husband, John; grandsons, Shawn Niday, Joshua Niday, Jacob Niday, Cooper Niday; and several great-grandchildren; brothers, Danny Niday, Robert Niday, George Huffman and wife, Bea, as well as a sister, Carolyn Niday.
The family will welcome friends on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, in the chapel of John M. Oakey Funeral Home, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Services will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Ben Lockhart officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Smith Cemetery in Masons Cove.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Shannon Palmer, Jeanine Horne, Liz Belcher, Eddie Watkins, Brittany Phipps and Lucas Ransbottom, Buddy Fransisco and Grace Switzer for the compassion and loving kindness shown to the family during this difficult time. Also, special thanks to the staff of both Roanoke Memorial Hospital and Lewis Gale Medical Center, namely Dr. Saks and Dr. Greene, for the compassionate care given to Gene throughout his illness.
