Rev. Guy A. Ritter, Jr. 94, of Salem, passed away on Tuesday November 19, 2013. He was born in Princeton, W. VA. In September of 1919 to the late Guy and Hildred Ritter. Educated in the public schools of Princeton. Entered Roanoke College in 1940, and went to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army in 1941, he served in European Theatre, U.S. Air Corps, and 141st Infantry, 36th Division. He returned to Roanoke College in 1946 where he graduated with an AB degree in 1948, Lutheran Theological Seminary, BD in 1951, STM in 1960. He was a Chaplain in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952-1954, and then served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1954 until he retired in 1984 as Lt. Col. Chaplain. He was also the Associate Professor of Religion at Roanoke College from 1957 until 1984. He was also the Pastor of Glade Creek Lutheran Church, in Blue Ridge, from 1956-1961 and served at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Springwood as Supply Pastor. He is survived by his loving wife, Doris May Ritter, two sons, Ivan Ritter and wife Nancy, and Paul Ritter, grandson, Scott Thomas and great granddaughter Ashlynn Thomas. The family will receive friends on Thursday November 21, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, 540-389-5441. A funeral service to honor the life of Rev. Guy A. Ritter will be held at St. Marks Lutheran Church 1008 Franklin Rd. Roanoke, at 11:00 am on Friday November 22, 2013 with Rev. James Armentrout and Rev. Paul Henrickson officiating, and interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Guy A.
