Glenwood B. Crockett, 82, of Craig County, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2015 after a brief illness.
He was born on November 27, 1932 in Roanoke, Va., the son of Burton M. Crockett and Margie Etta Bohon Crockett. He was a member of the LDS Church. Glen spent much of his youth in Hampton, Va. where he grew up enjoying time outdoors hunting and fishing with his favorite dog, Rattler. He excelled in track & field and loved to play football. He played football for the Army while in service during the Korean War. His real sports passion was weight-lifting, both Olympic style when he was younger and power lifting in masters (senior) class later in life. He held numerous state, national, and world titles and records. He once held the Virginia State record for cling & jerk 165 lb. class that stood for many years in the late 1950s. Glen retired from General Electric (Salem) in 1995 with 31 years of service in different positions, last of which was in the Navy stock room. His love of sports was only equaled by his love of horses, which he had all of his life. He loved to show, raise, and trail ride often. Not able to ride horses anymore, he spent time riding his motorcycles with his wife, Peggy. Many a luncheon trip was made to the Swinging Bridge Restaurant for an afternoon ride where everyone knew them and they had a standing reserved table.
Glen is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Peggy; children, Mark and his wife Elizabeth, and Lee and his wife, Yumi; grandchildren, Mitchell, Ken, Hiro, Max, and Michael; sister, Lawana and her husband, Dr. Robert M. Merrill; niece and nephew, Claire and Craig; cousins, Jimmy, Debbie, Joann, Danease, and Donna; life-long best friend, Bill Masters; and his two horses, Cissy and Fancy.
